But do not worry, we are here to explain all you we know about this popular Costa Rican saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This phrase is loaded of positivism and good vibes, so when you listen to locals saying those words during your family trip to Costa Rica, you will know that it means everything is good, positive and happy. It\u2019s the way we all have to express that everything is alright. Or to ask if it is this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <em>pura vida <\/em>can be used as a greeting and a farewell, as you can see in the dialogue below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Hey, \u00bfpura vida? \u00bfqu\u00e9 tal todo? \/ Hey! Pura vida? How\u2019s everything going?<\/li><li>Todo bien, gracias. \/ Everything alright, thanks.<\/li><li>\u00a1Qu\u00e9 bueno saberlo! Nos vemos pronto. \/ Good to know that! See you soon!<\/li><li>\u00a1Pura vida, adi\u00f3s! \/ Pura vida, bye!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this specific case the greeting started with an interrogative <em>pura vida<\/em> to open the conversation and concluded with another <em>pura vida<\/em> in order to say bye and end the conversation. Here in Costa Rica it is very common to start and finish dialogues this way. So, don\u2019t be surprised if you get a<em> pura vida<\/em> as welcome when you arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to use this phrase in Costa Rica is shown as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Hola, \u00bfc\u00f3mo est\u00e1s? \/ Hi! If you are talking about someone or describing a person -positively and negatively too- you can also say <em>pura vida.<\/em> Let\u2019s see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Kate es muy <em>pura vida<\/em>. Siempre est\u00e1 sonriendo. \/ Kate is <em>very nice<\/em>. She\u2019s always smiling.<\/li><li>Tom siempre est\u00e1 enojado, no es para nada <em>pura vida<\/em>. \/ Tom is always angry, he is not <em>cool<\/em> at all.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, you can realize that we use the phrase as an adjective too, not only for people, but also to describe how something is or was. This way, the possibilities of use of the phrase are almost infinite, as infinite are the ways people talk and express themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it occurs with all kinds of communication, you will surely understand the real meaning of the <em>pura vida<\/em> by the context in which it is being used. This way, we are pretty sure that you will discover a lot of uses and meanings for this expression during your Costa Rica holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While in the country, make sure to ask to your travel agents to teach you better how to use the expression <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelexcellence.com\/costa-rica-travel-blog\/top-5-reasons-why-you-should-visit-costa-rica\">when you visit any place<\/a> or to give you more examples of its use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, probably you might be wondering which the origin of this famous Costa Rican expression is. And we are here to give you a little explanation about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different Costa Rica experts that have been studying the origin of this expression indicate that the popular phrase could have arisen from a Mexican film titled the same way, that premiered in the country in 1956 and from which the Costa Ricans took their motto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film was directed by Gilberto Mart\u00ednez and in the film the expression was often used as eternal optimism, which probably was the main reason it stocked around for the <em>ticos<\/em>. In 1970 it became a nationwide expression until these days.
